Markit EDM v11.5 (Beta) Release Notification

December 22nd 2016

IHS Markit is pleased to announce the v11.5 (Beta) release of our Enterprise Data Management (EDM) software for clients participating in the beta program.
The highlights of this release are:
Markdown
  • Text Label UI element and Email Data Porter now both support Markdown syntax for rich text rendering.
  • Users can enter Markdown marked-up text which gets rendered into HTML.
  • Placeholders can be used for text to be replaced during the conversion from Markdown to HTML.
  • Custom HTML is disallowed to prevent the possibility of Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks.
Heat Map
  • New Heat Map Data Generator element displays colour-coded values in a grid.
  • Colours represent value bands (such as red for hot or green for not).
  • Similar to Microsoft Excel conditional formatting.
Charts
  • Kendo UI Charts introduced for improved visualisation and customisation.
  • New Chart UI elements include Line Chart, Bar Chart, Area Chart, Pie Chart, Scatter Chart, and Multi-Plot Chart.
Always-On
  • Ability to mark a solution as Always-On so that components will execute with better performance.
  • Always-On solutions are preloaded into memory on the application server through the Process Launcher Service.
Version Control
  • New components no longer being checked in (and out again) on first save, until explicitly checked in.
  • Change Sets now supported for Subversion, Team Foundation Server (TFS), and Database version control providers.
Navigation
  • New standard navigation menu (site map) to navigate through to the available workflow screens in the Web UI.
  • No need to "build your own" on every screen.
Other Changes
  • Markit EDM now supports SQL Server 2016, with the minimum required version still being SQL Server 2008.

For additional information about this release, please see the Markit EDM v11.5 release note on our Confluence support site.
Please contact your client manager if you are interested in participating in this beta release.

Markit EDM Product Update

Version 11.0

We are pleased to announce the release of version 11.0 of Markit EDM.  The highlights in this version include.

Concurrent Processing

All processing components now have the ability to run concurrently thus removing the issue of job queue generation caused by component locking.  This builds upon the concurrent solutions and process keys functionality introduced in the 10.* series.

In-Memory Processing

The Data Inspector and Data Constructor both have the option to run in memory rather than as a stored procedure using similar functionality to the Data Flow Component.  This will enable the ability to move the processing workload to the application server and to load-balance across multiple application servers.

Core Matcher

The Core Matcher brings a new style of matching, to align with the other major themes of concurrency and in-memory processing.  The process will now match to a central Core Record rather than to the individual source pairs, thereby considerably reducing the number of rules, and running as an in-memory service providing the option to prioritise Id requests from different sources.

The Core Matcher is still in Beta test while we test further scenarios internally and with clients.  A further announcement will confirm when the Core Matcher will be generally available.

Web UI

With the removal of Silverlight support in v11.0, the Web UI has been given a new theme to freshen up the look at feel.  The theme will be configurable in the future to suit client styles.
The Web UI will continue to evolve in future releases - with new grid and charting elements in version 11.5 and with new paging, responsive layouts, and end-user configuration in 2017.

For further details on the release please visit the following page in Confluence.

If you are interested in obtaining a copy of version 11.0, please contact your client manager.  If concurrent processing and the Core Matcher are of particular interest, please highlight this since you will require a new license.

Templates

The Index Master template has been added to our Template offering.  The template provides a model to house Index reference data, Index Levels and returns, and the underlying constituents' weights and returns.  The Index Master template can be connected into the other existing Templates:
          Security
          Party
          Price

Please contact your client manager or support to request a package containing the templates.  The package is supported from v10.5.3 onwards.

Future Developments

SQL 2008

We will look to remove support for SQL 2008 during the second release of 2017.  This is to allow us to focus on more recent functionality provided from SQL 2012 such as always-on services.

Component Definitions

In 2017 we will be changing the XML definition structure of each component type to provide more user friendly definitions.  This will help enable merging and branching as part of a version control strategy.

For most clients this will not be an issue, because the definitions exist in the EDM system tables, but any solution that interrogates the component definitions will need to be changed.

Upcoming release of Markit EDM Version 11

As we approach the release of version 11 we want to ensure that our release process is transparent. Starting with version 11 all releases will follow the following process.

Alpha builds are produced whenever we hit a development milestone. These Alpha builds are for internal consumption so that the professional services team can try functionality, provide feedback and build up best practice around new features. We can provide demos to clients that are interested in specific features to obtain feedback ahead of the release. This allows us to respond to feedback and improve features. For version 11 these releases will be in the version 10.8.x.x range.

When the test team begins their end to end regression test, the development phase is complete. A Beta release will be made available for clients participating in the beta program. The Beta release is supported in development only and is not intended for production.

The MEDM team works with the client to determine the appropriateness of inclusion in the beta program for each version.  The aim of the beta phase is to collect feedback on new features from the broader client base.  Ideal candidates would be those clients in early or active stages of development who intend to release the version into production once it is made generally available. Acceptance into the beta program comes with an agreement on expectations of both MEDM and the client during the beta phase. For version 11 these releases will be in the version 10.9.x.x range.

The release is made generally available when the end to end regression test has completed and the EDM product team has received sufficient feedback and addressed any serious concerns from the beta clients.. This release is represented with a version number of 11.0.0.0.
