Advisory Note on EDM Version Control Integration - December 2018

IHS Markit would like to inform you that we do not plan to offer further improvements around direct integration between EDM and external version control systems, such as TFS or SVN.

In 2019, we intend to move towards a standard that will better serve our customers. This will involve EDM exporting and storing component definitions in the file system, whereby any external source control provider can access them, enabling branching and merging capabilities outside of EDM. An import process would be created to import and synchronize the definitions back into the EDM database when needed from the file system.

While we will continue to support existing functionality that is already available in the EDM thick-client application, such as direct integration with TFS 2015 or SVN 1.8, there are no plans to add support for additional versions such as TFS 2018 or SVN 1.9.

Going forward, we are encouraging our customers to use our internal database version control system which provides maximum flexibility and control over version control integration. As of version 19.1, EDM's native database version control will still be leveraged to store individual historical version changes per component via the thick client even. Further database version control improvements have been made in the latest versions of EDM v11.5 (11.5.48.0+) and EDM v17.1 (17.1.123.2+) which can be reviewed in the release notes.

EDM v19.1 will be the last supported version for the following EDM features:

Advisory Note on Migrating from Microsoft Internet Explorer

EDM v17.1 marked a significant step on our path to providing users with a rich and dynamic application experience, with the latest generation of browser-based application frameworks such as Angular 6 and Kendo UI enabling us to improve the usability and responsiveness of EDM significantly.

With Microsoft now focusing on its flagship Edge web browser, we have found that the legacy Internet Explorer browser engine no longer offers peak performance when rendering web pages and web applications compared with more modern browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge. Since IE supports a smaller subset of the latest web standard (ECMAScript 6) than the other browsers, performance may be significantly slower, user interactivity may be impacted, and grids with very large data sets may be very slow to load when using Internet Explorer 11.0 to access EDM.

We are encouraging our clients to migrate from Internet Explorer to one of the better performing browsers that better support the present and future features of the improved EDM architecture.

Changes to the Bloomberg Per Security Web Service

On June 2, 2018, Bloomberg will no longer support TLS1.1 and will only support TLS1.2 connection for their products - Bloomberg CANS (Corporate Action Notification Service) Per Security, Data License.

Consequently the EDM's Data Porter plug-in: Bloomberg Per-Security Web Service Plug-in will not be able to connect to the Bloomberg endpoint for Plug-ins of EDM versions 10.5 and lower.

EDM version 11.0 and above uses the 4.6.1 .NET framework as noted in our Compatibility page in EDM Confluence.  The plug-in for these versions will be able to connect with TLS1.2 protocol as .NET 4.6 and later is compatible with TLS 1.2 by default.

The Markit EDM team is enhancing this plug-in to ensure successful connection to the TLS1.2 supported Bloomberg endpoint that takes effect on June 02, 2018 for EDM versions of 10.5 and below that use an older .NET framework version.

Additionally, the Markit EDM team is introducing a parameter to change the Bloomberg webservice URL for all EDM versions of the plug-in. The default webservice URL will be the true Bloomberg endpoint - https://dlws.bloomberg.com/dlps. This plug-in parameter can be changed so clients can test with Bloomberg's UAT environment (e.g. https://dlws-uat.bloomberg.com/dlps). This enhancement can be used for testing with Bloomberg's UAT environment should there be future changes from Bloomberg.

If you do not use the Markit Bloomberg Per-Security Web Service Plugin, no further action is needed.  However, if you do use the plugin then please contact the Markit EDM Support team as soon as possible confirming which version(s) of EDM are affected and we will provide you with the updated plugin

Technical Brief: Impact Assessment of Spectre and Meltdown Processor Bug Patches on EDM

In response to the recent news of the Meltdown and Spectre computer chip bugs which could potentially allow attackers to access sensitive data, microprocessor manufacturers and operating system vendors have been busy devising patches to protect against the perceived security risks. While these rapidly-introduced patches are intended to address the security vulnerabilities, they may incur some performance penalties on the underlying systems.
We will strive to provide our clients with early warning of any adverse impact resulting from the applied processor patches. Currently the EDM team is actively monitoring the performance results of our continuous integration and performance tests to assess any potential performance degradation for our managed services and client-installed implementations.
In this fluid situation where the impact can vary significantly depending on usage and complexity of operating environments, we encourage our customers also to monitor their own EDM installations where applicable.
Any clients who do notice any performance degradation of EDM once their systems have been patched are encouraged to notify EDM Support.

Software reaches end of life support for a number of reasons such as technology innovation and development driven changes to the product, or the software matures over time and is replaced by functionally richer technology.
Access to Full EDM software support will be available for a period of 2 YEARS from the date of release of a Major EDM version.

Full Support
Comprises investigation and replication where possible and workarounds identified within local support environments.
  • Software issues will be addressed in upgraded releases within the major EDM version.

Partial Support
Comprises investigation and replication where possible, for a FURTHER 1 YEAR from the date of end of full support.  However, we cannot guarantee to have a local support environment available and support may be limited to webEx sessions, enterprise software jira, telephone and e-mail support.
  • IHS Markit EDM will no longer develop or address issues in the software for partially supported EDM versions.

Unsupported
Unsupported version support will be limited to webEx sessions, enterprise software jira, telephone and e-mail support only.  EDM support will not have local environments available to enable investigation or replication of issues.
  • IHS Markit EDM will no longer develop or address issues in the software for unsupported EDM versions.
